Selling My Way From $40K To $1M, In Public

I am Matt, a Canadian options premium seller documenting the climb from $40K to $1M CAD. I sell cash secured puts and covered calls on Wealthsimple. Every fill gets published weekly. Wins and losses, no hindsight edits.

This site is the front door. The newsletter lives on Substack, and that is where every new issue lands first.

How The Machine Works

Sell puts on stocks I want, at prices I want. Take the premium. Use the premium to buy more shares. Sell covered calls on those shares. Stack the income. Repeat.

Default practice is holding short puts to expiry. Rolls happen for a credit and a better setup, not for comfort. Size is set assuming assignment happens, so assignment never forces a bad decision.

If you are searching for how cash secured puts work in Canada, how selling puts on Wealthsimple actually runs week to week, or how the wheel strategy fits inside a TFSA and a margin account, this journal shows the real fills behind those questions.

Latest Issue

Rinse And Repeat

Week two ran the way the system is supposed to run. Premium came in, rolls happened when the plan said roll, and one honest mistake still paid. The issue walks through the $APLD expiry, the $HIMS roll, the $IREN rolls, the big $FWDI roll, and the scoreboard.

Bitcoin bought automatically, $100 every paycheck through Wealthsimple. Held long term and never traded. It is not part of the options book and no calls are sold on it. It just stacks, paycheck after paycheck, in the background while the premium engine does the weekly work.

Issue 2, October 11, 2026

Rinse And Repeat

Week two was the system working as designed. An $APLD put expired worthless for $45 after earnings. A $HIMS covered call was rolled for a $58 credit instead of giving up the shares. Two $IREN puts were rolled down as the stock fell, and ten $FWDI puts were rolled to November for a $470 credit. The issue also owns a wrong ticker roll on $SMCI that still banked profit, lays out the honest timeline, and closes with the scoreboard at the time, October at $853 and all time at $4,946.

Topics in this issue: cash secured puts, covered call rolls, put rolls during a selloff, position sizing, and the honest math behind the $1M target.

Why I Am Selling My Way To $1M

The opening issue sets the whole project. Matt introduces the climb from $40K to $1M CAD, explains why selling premium beats buying options for his style, and names the Canadian gap in most options writing, which assumes a US account and says little about Wealthsimple, TFSA rules, and margin treatment in Canada. It also states the risk plainly: a violent gap down can force owning stock at the wrong price, and when it happens it will be published here.

Topics in this issue: why sell options instead of buying them, time decay, zero commission options on Wealthsimple, and what readers get every week.

My Put Selling Checklist

I sell puts every week. This is the exact checklist I run before every fill. It is one page on purpose. If a trade fails any line, I skip it.

  1. 1

    Would I Own It

I only sell puts on stocks I would be fine owning. Assignment is not a failure. It is buying the stock at a discount. If I do not want the shares, I do not sell the put.

  2. 2

    Weeklies First

I sell weekly expiries. More rolls per year, more premium, faster course correction. Monthlies tie my money up for nothing.

  3. 3

    Sell Below The Market

The strike goes below the current price, not at it. Breakeven is strike minus premium. That number is my real entry price and I know it before I click.

  4. 4

    Check The Calendar

Earnings are gap risk, not drift risk. I never sell a weekly over earnings unless I want that exposure. One earnings gap can erase a month of premium.

  5. 5

Premium Has To Be Worth It

Small premium for real risk is a bad trade. I want enough that assignment still feels like a win.

  6. 6

    Default Is Hold To Expiry

I do not panic out of a red put. The plan is hold to expiry unless the math changes. Early exits are for broken theses, not red screens.

  7. 7

Roll For Credit, Never For Comfort

If I roll, it is for a credit and a better setup. I never roll just to push a loss into next week. The credit has to pay for the risk I am signing back up for.

  8. 8

Size It So Assignment Never Hurts

I size every put assuming I get assigned. If owning the full position would force me to sell something else, the put is too big.

That is the whole thing. Rinse and repeat. Every fill gets published weekly in North of the Strike, wins and losses.

About

About North of the Strike

I am Matt. I work a regular job in Ontario, I am a dad, and I sell options premium in my spare hours with one long goal in mind, more time with my family and a way out of the rat race. This newsletter documents the trading part of that plan, in public, with real numbers.

The Honest Timeline

Time to say the quiet part about the $40K to $1M target. The five year version needs about 90 percent a year, every year. That is gambling math, not trading math. A target like that forces stupid sizing, and stupid sizing is how accounts die.

Here is the honest version. Ten years at a sane pace lands near $500K, and $500K changes a family life. Twelve years puts seven figures in range. Ten to fifteen years is the real window, because somewhere in there a dead year will show up. I am happy with that timeline. The pressure is off. Anything the moon stocks do is upside on top.

Two Books, Plus A Third

The book is really two books. The premium engine pays the bills and funds everything else, selling puts and covered calls week after week. The moon book is a few high conviction names held with no calls on top, so when one of them moves hard I keep the whole move. The way into moon names is still premium first, selling puts on dips and getting paid to wait for my price.

The newsletter is the third book. It keeps me honest, it forces me to write down the reasoning before the outcome is known, and if it grows it becomes another income stream that goes back into the account.

Why Canada Matters Here

Almost everything written about premium selling assumes a US account. Canadians get different tools and different traps, Wealthsimple with zero commission options, TFSA rules, and margin that ties up only part of a strike instead of the full amount. This journal is written from inside that setup, not translated from an American one.
